Gas Lamps

Once upon a time, if people wanted light, they had to know how to light a gas lamp. One of the oldest forms of lighting is the gas lamp, set up to use natural gas as fuel. Before there was a centralized electricity system, gas lamps not only lit city streets but the homes of the wealthy. Although using natural gas is no longer necessary, old gas table lamps are quite sought after on the antique market as they doubled as both functional yet extremely detailed light sources on the inside and the outside. While there is not much use for a gas powered lamp these days, the look of these classic light sources can be found quite easily in the front yards and gracing the front porches of homes every where.

Whether it’s the small table lamp for an indoor setting or the traditional outside gas lamp, many of the lamps that are found today use electricity thanks to a gas lamp light conversion kit. When the general population switched to electricity, to save expenses many light sources were simply converted. For larger outside lamps, a clear glass housing surrounds the light source. A smaller antique gas light lamp shade is also generally found to be made of glass but can be the most decorative part of the lamp. It is not uncommon to find a tasteful Tiffany shade displaying just about every colour. The light of an iron gas lamp is appreciated for the fact that it gives a delicate, natural brilliance that is pleasant and warm.

Although it is good to read the manufacturer’s instructions for care and maintenance, sometime they are not available and instructions that show how to light a gas lamp safely can be found online. Should finding a working gas lamp prove difficult, one can always go online and learn how to make a gas lamp using a propane source. This can not only create an unforgettable affect in a room it can be a totally unique light source for those stormy nights. It is a much better, brighter source of light and, unlike candles, they will not blow out or leave any wax drippings to clean up. These updated lamps are fun and functional as well as smart and safe lighting options with a decorative flair. Luckily, a tradition of beauty does not have to end due to the advances in technology.
