Floor Lamps

Floor lamps are a light source in which the base of the lamp sits on the floor. The rest of the lamp extends toward the ceiling to provide a type of overhead lighting. Torchiere floor lamps are a good example of this. Floor lamps can either be simple or decorative pieces of illuminated art. They can be made of any number of materials, from wood to metal to even paper in some cases. Because they can set up in a corner without taking up a great amount of room, they are a great choice for apartments or offices.

A number of companies make contemporary floor lamps in a range of materials and prices. They are often decorative enough to fit into any decorating scheme. The design of a contemporary floor lamp can range from extremely simple unassuming lines to a multiple tiered tripod floor lamp made of hammered bronze. For those on a budget, replicas of an antique floor lamp or a Tiffany floor lamp can deliver the same look without the heavy price tag.

When looking to create an earthy vibe, a wood floor lamp can effectively help carry the flow. Since these lamps can end up in the highly decorative end of the spectrum, extremely detailed antique floor lamps and Tiffany floor lamps are a great choice for those looking to establish a classical theme to a room. On the other end, a floor lava lamp provides an ultra-modern element and will look great with space age furniture. Those shooting for a truly unique look can opt for a piece with lamp shades made of red paper. A floor lamp of this design is often found in rooms where architectural lines are the focus.

When there is limited space and great need for light, halogen floor lamps can deliver a great amount of illumination. The height of a floor lamp is often tall enough to send light up to the ceiling where it can bounce off and be an efficient light source for the room. An attractive torchiere lamp that uses a halogen bulb can add a decorative element to a room while adding the perfect amount of effective light. Placing this type of lamp in a corner behind a chair can create the perfect spot for reading. There are even floor lamps that have multiple light sources that hang over the back of a sofa for the purpose of creating localized lighting.
